The topic of this chapter, which - like the whole of this publication - is of great topical importance in the context of the current war in Ukraine, is environmental protection in armed conflict. At first glance, this topic may seem peripheral given the widespread violations of other rules of international humanitarian law (IHL), including those that constitute war crimes.
However, despite the apparently anthropocentric conception of IHL (special regulations applicable to armed conflicts), whose main objective is the humanization of armed conflicts, the environment is not a marginal topic.
