Abstract
While conspiracism is frequently seen as purely pathological, it is perhaps more useful to read it as a specific way of criticising the ills of our present-day social order by means of symbolic images. As an example the article analyses conspiracist fear of electronic surveillance, showing it as a way of thematizing the dangers of "dataism".
