Wisdom as a research subject in psychology

Abstract

Wisdom as a complex phenomena that is difficult to grasp was long avoided by psychologists. With the shift in paradigm and the arrival of positive psychology on the verge of millenia, the time came for it to get the attention of researchers.

This article introduces current most influential wisdom conceptions, which range from approaches considering wisdom as a relatively stable personality trait to constructi- vist's approach, in which wisdom originates from a certain type of a person's behaviour in a certain situation and can be intraindividually variable to a significant extent. For each conception, wisdom measurement methods will be introduced and their strengths and weaknesses discussed.

The plurality of wisdom definitions and variability in its measurement has negatively influenced the comparability of results from empirical research. Therefore, current endeavours of researchers to come to a consensus about core wisdom characteristics is reflected in the last part of the article.
