Abstract

The essay examines the genre of snapshot photography as a subject and method for feminist new materialisms. While snapshot photography has been considered conventional, ritualistic and superficial I show how the lack of premeditation and apparent flaws in technical execution can productively reorient inquiry.

Theoretial work on vernacular photography and snapshots by Romani women that do do centre the human are enlisted to showcase these affordances.
