Abstract
The review article contains a literature review of significant milestones in research and clinical applications of estrogens. Estrogen research has undergone an exciting historical development, including the study of specific physiological changes in the body and human reproductive functions, the discovery of the principle of endocrine glands and the isolation of estrogens, their synthesis and receptor activity.
The research enabled the clinical application of estrogens from hormonal contraception to treat disease by modulating estrogen receptor function.
