Through the Ears of the Middle Class: Music, Youth and Class in Czech Post‑Socialism

Abstract

The aim of this book is to explore the different levels of the relationship between music, youth and class. The chronological scope of the work is characterised by a period of great openness to various social issues and the establishment of meanings relevant to the broader period of post-socialist change.

The main research question in this book explores intersections between the three categories under consideration, i.e. music, youth and class. It asks the following: In what ways might class as a social category have been formed among the youth in the context of post-socialist change and music production, reception and dissemination? Sub-research questions then relate to space, procedural change and role models: where and how did this formation occur and what models was it based on? The thesis unfolds at the three levels that are studied; first at the level of place, then at the level of historical process, and finally in the form of a typified collective biography of the figure.

Each of these planes is elaborated into sub-sections, with the optic of the process perhaps best captured by giving the historical work the most space. It is therefore progressively elaborated with respect to the musical subject, the whole, the medium and the artefact.
