Abstract

Background: Prehabilitation training is an integral part of preoperative preparation before major surgery. The exact structure of the prehabilitation training program is not clear from the conducted research.

Therefore, we have developed our own training model for patients who will undergo this major thoracic surgery (thoracotomy). Aim: The aim of this pilot study was to demonstrate the effect of a training model aimed at improving respiratory function.

Design and methodology: The study was conducted as an observational study, data collection was prospective, and the total study period was six weeks. The selected probands (n=27) were examined at the Department of Sports Medicine at Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem, o. z. (Krajská zdravotní, a. s.), the training model was implemented with them at the Faculty of Health Studies (UJEP, Ústí nad Labem).

Functional parameters (respiratory circumference amplitudes in axilla, mesosternal and xiphosternal), respiratory parameters (FVC and FEV1) and endurance function index (6MWT) were evaluated. Subjective satisfaction of probands was assessed by questionnaire survey.

Results: statistically significant improvement was shown in all functional parameters and in the 6MWT endurance test. Conclusion: the results of our study demonstrate a statistically significant effect of prehabilitation on respiratory parameters in healthy probands.

Significant improvement was also achieved by probands in the 6MWT. There was no statistically significant difference in the functional respiratory parameters at the beginning and at the end of testing.
