Primary hyperparathyroidism: pathophysiology and clinical impacts

Publication |
2014

Abstract

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a generalized disorder of kalcium and phosphate metabolism. It is a result of long-term increased secretion of parathormone by a pathologically changed parathyroid gland.

The most often cause is an adenoma of one or more parathyroid glands. Due to general symptoms at the early stage, often severe disorders of different organs in the whole body and possible curative treatment, the primary diagnosis represents a domain of many specialists including dentists.

The article summarizes known data about PHPT related to dentistry.
