Abstract

In our two-part series, we summarize the results of the research of mineral springs and their surroundings in the territory of the PLA Slavkovský les and the national nature reserve Soos, which was carried out by our team of authors. We focused on the microscopic inhabitants of a few selected springs, which are photoautotrophic (i.e. photosynthesizing) eukaryotic algae, specifically unicellular diatoms.

We wanted to know not only their current species composition, but also their past, to find out when the springs were created and what species lived here then. Diatoms are used as bioindicators to evaluate water quality and can tell us a lot about the character of a given spring.
