The Vltava River – Transformations of a Historical Landscape

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2022

Abstract

The publication The Vltava River - Transformations of a Historical Landscape was prepared within the research project conducted at the departments of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague (the Department of Geomatics and the Department of Hydraulic Structures), and of the Faculty of Science of the Charles University (the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development and the Department of Applied Geoinformatics and Cartography) between 2018 and 2022. The project, which brought together numerous experts from various institutions, was aimed at identification, documentation, reconstruction and popularization of material and immaterial cultural heritage of the probably the most well known and popular river in Czechia, the Vltava.

Landscape along the river has transformed mostly due to technical interventions (mainly the construction of dams) and changes in the functions of the river in the context of economic, societal and political developments. Main aim of the project was to process a large number of archival materials (historical documents, maps, plans, photographs) and, using modern information technologies and combining and analysing them, to create a comprehensive information system about the Vltava River, or its section 367 km in length respectively, from its source in the border mountain ranges of the Šumava Mountains in South Bohemia to the confluence with the Berounka River at the southern edge of the Capital City of Prague.
