Photography implies a process of differentiation that concerns the subject and reality as well as the field that mediates both with each other. The change in the understanding of subject, reality and their mutual reference that took place in the 19th century through photography leads to the subject experiencing itself as inserted into the real, but so that reality becomes available only in its principle unavailability, and this contrast between a subject that is inserted into reality and at the same time experiences itself as not suspended in it marks the tense relationship between the two. - Each of the contributions to this volume takes up its own track of making difference in the context of the photographic image a subject: the tension manifested in photography with reality and the real, with the self and the other, with language and writing, with ethics and politics, as well as with philosophical thought.
