Abstract

The Czech Botanical Society has chosen Adonis aestivalis as the plant of the year for 2022. The genus Adonis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family and includes over 30 species (it is native to Europe, Asia and North Africa, but has also been introduced to North America and Australia).

Species in genus Adonis can be both perennial (e.g. the domestic species Adonis vernalis) and annuals, which are the majority and which also include our segetal (weedy) species like summer buttercup and flame buttercup (A. flammea). In addition to the mentioned representatives of the genus, we rarely see the annual Adonis (Adonis annua), which is grown as an annual.
