Venous thromboembolism (venous thromboembolic event - VTE) associated with cancer (cancer associated thromboembolism - CAT) includes two clinical entities - deep vein thrombosis (DVT), occurring most often in the lower extremities, and pulmonary embolism (PE). The incidence of CAT in oncology patients is increasing due to the improvement of antitumor treatment options and the prolongation of patients' lives.
Malignancy is associated with a hypercoagulable state. The incidence of CAT is 3% for all malignant tumors, over 5% for those treated with systemic therapy.
Preventive and therapeutic measures include the use of anticoagulation medication with LMWH or DOAC. Recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment, diagnosis, criteria for the appropriate choice of anticoagulation drugs and their dosage are given.
