The buffer power of plasma proteins: experimental observations are consistent while the definitions are not

Abstract

We read with interest the paper by Matthew B.Wolf and congratulate the author on further improvement of his multicompartment model of acid-base equilibrium. In this paper, the author discusses two seemingly contradictory findings.

The first is an association between low albumin con-centration and enhanced buffering against PCO2, expressed as dPCO2/d[Hþ], in plasma-like solutions. The other is a positive correlation between albumin concentration and buffering ability, expressed as d[HCO3]/dpH, in normo- and hypoal-buminemic plasma samples.

In this letter, we would like to demonstrate that these data are not contradictory.
