Stem cell therapy in patients with peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot disease

Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and diabetic foot ulcers are frequent and severe complications of diabetes mellitus. Ischaemia is the major cause of amputation in diabetic patients.

However therapeutical options available at present are not sufficient in all patients. Therapy of stem cells obtained by bone marrow biopsy (BMSC - bone marrow stromal cells) or separated from peripheral blood after stimulation of bone marrow (PBPC - peripheral blood progenitor cells) could be a perspective therapeutic method of PAD.

Standard methods for PAD therapy still remain percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and by-pass.
