Wound healing takes place in several phases - hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and maturation. The whole process is affected both at the local and at the system level.
In patients with diabetes mellitus, wound healing is complicated by local changes in agents (changes in growth factors, extracellular matrix, enzymes), different cell activity and granulation tissue formation, bacterial or fungal infections, higher prevalence of ICHDK and increased production of ROI (reactive oxygen intermediates). In addition to the mentioned local factors, systemic factors such as diabetes compensation, immune system capacity and nutritional status affect healing.
