The publication of our leading specialists in the field was created on the basis of new experiences gained as part of teamwork in the education of diabetics. It is primarily intended for diabetics, but also for educational nurses and doctors caring for diabetics, nutritional therapists, psychologists, rehabilitation and social workers, podiatrists and other experts.
Already in the introductory chapter on diabetes, it is emphasized that the basis of its successful treatment is high-quality and professionally led education, which helps diabetics manage diabetes independently. In other articles, the reader will find information about new trends in self-monitoring of diabetes - not only the technology of continuous blood glucose monitoring has improved, but also the possibility of downloading data from pumps and glucometers to a computer.
The manual also provides an overview of new drugs, including new types of insulin, and points to improvements in the technical means for insulin treatment. In the chapter on nutrition, the authors present new dietary recommendations and point to significant changes in the approach to the diabetic diet.
Opinions on adjustments to the treatment regimen have also changed, especially regarding hypoglycemia and its treatment. The chapter on cardiovascular complications deals, among other things, with the so-called "sleep apnea syndrome", which is quite common in diabetics, but if it is recognized and treated in time, it may not have serious consequences.
Much attention is paid to the socio-psychological issues of diabetes and physical activity, including proper rehabilitation. The final, detailed chapter on education, which is intended for health professionals, emphasizes, among other things, the recommended procedure of the Czech Diabetological Society and the methodology of educating diabetics.
Throughout the entire text, the authors recommend diabetics to cooperate with educators during their study, who should help them select important information from the book, understand it correctly, and apply it appropriately in their own lives. The authors hope that readers - diabetics as well as educators and other experts - will find useful advice in the book that they can apply in everyday practice.
