In the early twentieth century, between Göttingen and Freiburg, the nascent Husserlian phenomenology was taking shape, for which the exponents of the so-called "Munich circle" were of fundamental importance. The philosopher Maximilian Beck was part of this school, whose interests and research paths allowed him to get in touch with Martin Heidegger: a painstakingly built relationship that ended after a few months.

The examination of unpublished archival documents and the exchange of letters between the two makes accessible for the first time the content of an essay written by Beck on Heidegger's Being and Time and of the debate that arose after its publication, which led to their removal. From the analysis of this text, Beck's strongly critical tone towards the work is perceived, words that had a wide resonance in the circle of scholars that revolved around Heidegger and which influenced the reception of the text among Husserl's first disciples.

The work carried out on the sources by Daniele De Santis leads to an extraordinary rereading of Heidegger's work, capable of illuminating many aspects, but also of better understanding Husserl's transcendental turning point and Beck's specific metaphysical contribution to Munich phenomenology, which - as Francesco Alfieri observes in the Preface - continues to open up new avenues of work.
