Abstract
This paper will present partial results of my dissertation research, which deals with the spelling and phonology of the so-called Cistercian Bible (New York City, The Morgan Library & Museum, shelfmark MS M.752, 1456). The Cistercian Bible contains the text of the third redaction of the Old Czech Bible translation and, in our opinion, provides a very representative record of diacritical spelling, which can reflect with a high degree of reliability the contemporary pronunciation of Old Czech. In the manuscript, we find in the vast majority of cases both the quantity of vowels and the quality of consonants adequately written (e.g., Ptáky nebeſké a rýby moṙſké. kteréž przecházegí ſtezky moṙſké /Ptáky nebeské a rýby mořské, kteréž přecházejí stezky mořské/ BiblCist Ps 8:9).
For possessive pronouns of the type "náš" and "váš", grammars of historical Czech record long -á- in the monosyllabic "náš" and "váš", but in older texts also in the nominative and accusative of two-syllabic possessives (e.g. "nášě", "vášě"; see Gebauer III/1, 1896, p. 486; Vážný 1964, p. 127-128; Šlosar 1986, p. 185.) The paper will present an analysis focused on the recorded (or unrecorded) quantity of these possessives in selected passages of the Cistercian Bible and compare it with the described situation in grammars of historical Czech.
