Abstract
The chapter is devoted to the status of Spanish/Castilian in contemporary Spain. The description of one of the world's most widely spoken languages is set in a global and European context and also takes into account historical developments.
The sociolinguistic factors that define the relationship between Spanish as a national language and other languages that are official only in a particular territory are analysed in detail.
