Abstract
The chapter is devoted to a sociolinguistic analysis of the current status of Galician in Spain. The description of the language is set in a historical context.
The authors discuss, among other things, the coexistence of Galician and Spanish in various areas of social life (government, education, etc.). Particular attention is paid to the historical and contemporary relationship with Portuguese and to issues of linguistic norms.
