How to deal theologically with the foreign? Theo Sundermeier's understanding of convivencia and its applicability to post-modern society

Abstract

In this article I try to answer the question whether the notion of convivencia, as elaborated by the German missiologist Theo Sundermeier, is relevant and appropriate for the theological interpretation of contemporary society. Convivencia contains a cognitive dimension, a dimension of practice and a dimension of celebration.

In the postmodern situation, the first dimension seems to be the most difficult because of the many obstacles, the biggest of which is the belief that every person has "his" truth. Nevertheless, I am convinced that it is possible today to at least attempt a dialogue.

After all, God is also always trying again, always addressing man and waiting for a response. The starting point remains awareness of one's own position, but at the same time respect for the other. On the basis of these assumptions, we dare to enter into the story of the other, to become part of their world, at least for a while, to co-experience and co-feel.
