DANTE AND KOMENSKY: SPACE AND LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD

Abstract

The presented contribution is based on a long-term interest in the work of Dante Alighieri and an effort to find new links between the work of this European poet, thinker and philosopher with the work of other key figures of European knowledge, here with a closer look at Jan Amos Komensky. One of the main motifs of Dante's work is space shaped in the spirit of medieval cosmology - geocentric theory and the spherical system. A characteristic feature for both Komensky and Dante is the pilgrim's movement through circles and subsequent verticalization - reaching the highest goal. Wandering through space is done with the help of a guide who is the pilgrim's advisor. The space itself is constructed with an imprint of current reality, or historical moments.

For both authors, it is therefore necessary to work with space as a physical, but also a psychological concept, to accept it also on a socio-cultural level and, of course, as a reflection of current reality. The aim of the paper is not only to point out the parallels between the two authors, but also the fact that the ideas of the Middle Ages have been preserved among thinkers despite almost four centuries.
