Abstract

The contribution fulfils a long term need to appreciate the pioneering work of Jan Renner (1869-1959), the first administrator of Rakovník Museum and the founder of systematic archaeological research in region of Rakovník. The current generation of museum workers and archaeologists still relies on his results, which he regularly published in the Věstník Musejního spolku, which he also helped to create.

His field activities include the survey and identification of the battlefield near Rakovník (1620) and the medieval grange of Kokrdov, the documentation and research of Hlavačov Castle, the publication of the Palaeolithic station near Lubná or the rescue of prehistoric finds in Chrášťany. However, the extent of his work was much larger - from organizing of city archive, through writing the city chronicles to the rescue and protection of architectural and artistic monuments and active community life in general.
