Belarus-Russia relations. Identity as product and factor

Abstract

This chapter places Belarus-Russia relations in the context of the debates on national identity and 'Otherness' by examining how multiple identity projects existing in Belarus hold no consensus over how to relate to Russia. It argues that indeterminacy vis-a-vis Russia is a resonant feature of the Belarusian identity.

In doing so, it demonstrates the use of liminality as a discursive resource in identity formation and with it, the consequences that the liminal experience entails.
