Revisiting Býčí Skála Cave (Moravia): The Early Iron Age Sanctuary in the Light of New Discoveries

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2023

Abstract

The Býčí Skála Cave is one of the most important speleo-archaeological sites in Central Europe. It is a central cave site of the Hallstatt period (Early Iron Age), which was repeatedly visited and where the burials of the most important "Early Celtic" elites were placed.

The lecture does not only present the history of cave research, this year numbering 150 years, but also discusses the various interpretive possibilities that the discovery offers. It also presents a two-year revision research on the site and the first results of scientific analysis performed there.

Currently, 10 domestic and 6 foreign institutions are collaborating on the project. Natural science analysis provides knowledge on C14, chemical analysis, plant macro-residues, anthropology, amber, wood, felt, etc.
