Tactile maps: Whole world under your fingers

Publication at Central Library of Charles University |
2022

Abstract

It is very difficult for people with visual impairments to form a coherent picture of space. Tactile maps bring a whole new way of doing that, allowing blind people to explore a map of any place in the world.

The cooperation between ELSA CTU, Teiresias MUNI and Seznam.cz has resulted in a globally unique project. Tactile maps are automatically generated from commonly available map materials and their processing corresponds to the principles of tactile work.

The conversion of the map base is automatic, so it is possible to print the map directly. If the user does not have the necessary technology, he can order the map and have it printed by mail or consult about its selection.

The hapticke.mapy.cz service is available to everyone, and it is completely free of charge.
