Ugly Manuscripts of Crux of Telč

Publication

Abstract

The medieval manuscripts stored in the National Library of the Czech Republic mostly originate from the 14th and 15th centuries. These are not richly illuminated codices made from rare parchment, but often hastily written, messy, or even "ugly" paper volumes.

The exhibition will present those that have been handled by a single, very active scribe, Crux of Telč. He has transcribed or annotated a total of more than 25,000 pages with various texts.

This is a rare collection that provides unique evidence of medieval thought and culture.
