Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2024

Abstract

The book is the first original Czech work devoted to the anthropological understanding of war as a social and cultural phenomenon, showing its many aspects. The author rejects the understanding of non-literate societies as fundamentally either peaceful or warlike.

He critically engages with existing anthropological approaches to war and warfare. He demonstrates main reasons of war on selected examples of non-literate cultures.

The book also includes a discussion of anthropological knowledge that has been applied as part of strategy in various war conflicts. The author shows war and warfare as part of the cultural repertoire of humankind, while at the same time trying to make the case that humans are not doomed by its nature to warfare.
