Abstract
Independent authorities are an important part of the administrative structures of most countries. This article is an attempt to categorise Czech independent administrative authorities.
It captures their characteristics, what attributes of independence they are endowed with and how these attributes have evolved. Using the internationally used Gilardi index, it provides a quantitative assessment of the independence of 18 selected Czech institutions.
The article also includes statistical data on the leaders of these institutions, their professional backgrounds, their links to political parties and their chances of completing their mandate, for the period 1993-2021.
