In the lecture, I introduced and discussed postcolonial theory and Nigerian literature. I described postcolonial theory by highlighting historical provenance, its characteristics, moments and critical texts that have shaped its discourse in Africa and elsewhere.

Briefly relating oral literature as a pre-colonial presence, I traced the history, context, and themes of Nigerian literature, demonstrating this with literary examples (fiction, poetry, drama and some critical texts) of postcolonial Africa/ Nigeria. I explained how postcolonial theory undergirded and shaped Nigerian literature along its cultural, spatial and temporal lines.

The lecture offered the scope and meaning of postcolonial studies and its textual approach, which hinges on exploring Nigerian texts within the embeddedness of postcolonial theory and social contexts. I concluded my lecture with reading my poems in Answers through the Bramble and demonstrating how I explored postcolonial issues in them.
