The study deals with the comparison of approaches to the assessment of compositions in both German and Czech environments. Czech and German didactics of a mother tongue are divided by the typological difference between German and Czech. However, they are connected by the historical proximity of educational systems and similar didactic approaches to teaching a national language. The study is methodologically based on a selection of reference works from the search engine UKAŽ (sources of Czech and Anglo-Saxon provenance) and the Google
Scholar search engine (sources of German provenance). The selected list of reference works on German and Czech subject didactics was further extended by relevant titles of secondary literature contained in those sources. Concerning the examined aspects of the assessment of compositions, this study is mainly focused on the application of criterion-referenced assessment and examines different approaches to evaluation criteria and their importance. The study presents the advantages of methods used in German-speaking countries and offers inspiration for current domestic discussions on evaluation.
