Abstract
POEMS is an acronym for a characteristic set of symptoms of a rare disease, which arises from secondary damage to various organs due to plasma cell dyscrasia. It is coined from Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal protein, Skin changes.
Hypogonadism, hyperprolactinemia, gynecomastia, hypothyroidism, impaired glucose metabolism, less often adrenal insufficiency or calcium-phosphate metabolism disorder belong to endocrinopathies occuring within the syndrome. Endocrinologist plays an important role in multidisciplinary team that takes care of patients suffering from POEMS syndrome.
