Addressing Devastation in Gaelic Literature of the Clearances

Abstract

The essay focuses on the images of devastation in Scottish Gaelic literature which addresses the topic of the Clearances, ranging from poetry composed at the time of the events to works of twentieth-century poets, including Derick Thomson and Sorley MacLean. The essay also makes references to Gaelic poetry and journalism which connected the Clearances with contemporary issues of nuclear warfare and army projects located in the Western Isles of Scotland
