Abstract

In few countries in the world do general practitioners have such a role in prevention as in the Czech Republic. They actively intervene in all areas of prevention.

Together with their nurses in surgeries, they have the best opportunity for all health professionals to influence patients in the field of primary prevention. They play a crucial role in secondary prevention and in the screening programs that are part of it.

Together with doctors of other specializations, it works in tertiary prevention. And they have a very specific mission in quaternary prevention.

Czech general practitioners should excel in knowledge in the field of prevention and mediate information to their patients. They should be able to explain screening programs, their benefits, and possible risks.

Preventive measures and health-promotion activities recommended by physicians should be based on scientific evidence or strong professional consensus. The basis for secondary and tertiary prevention is embedded in the Practical guidelines of the Czech Society of General practitioners.
