Trends in extramarital fertility in the Czech Republic after 1989

Abstract

Since the early 1990s, there have been relatively large changes in reproductive behaviour in the Czech Republic, including a significant increase in the proportion of children born out of wedlock. The article details the evolution of the fertility intensity of unmarried women compared to women married in 1989-2014 based on the data of a regular record.

Attention is paid to the three main influences on the proportion of children born out of wedlock, most understandably the intensity of extramarital and marital fertility (according to the age and order of births). The analysis shows that although there has been a convergence of fertility rates between married and unmarried women since the beginning of the 21st century, the procreational behaviour of these women still differs significantly (the average age of the mother at birth of the (first) child, the structure of the babies born according to the order of birth).
