Abstract

Public sociology is a field of sociology that focuses on understanding and addressing social issues in the public sphere. It involves applying sociological theories and methods to the study of social problems and working to engage with and empower communities to bring about positive social change. In an age of perpetual crisis, the crisis of the public sphere has become a key concern for public sociology.

The public sphere is the realm of social life where individuals come together to discuss and debate issues of public concern. It is a space where individuals can express their opinions and engage in dialogue with others, and where public opinion is formed. The crisis of the public sphere refers to a breakdown in the ability of individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue and debate, and a loss of trust in institutions and the media. This crisis is often attributed to the proliferation of fake news, the polarization of political discourse, and the increasing influence of special interests on public policy.

By examining the social, cultural, and economic factors that contribute to the breakdown of the public sphere, public sociologists can help to identify strategies for strengthening the public sphere and fostering more inclusive and democratic forms of communication. This may involve working with communities to develop media literacy skills, supporting grassroots efforts to hold institutions accountable, and promoting the development of alternative media outlets and platforms.

Overall, the study of public sociology and the crisis of the public sphere is crucial for understanding and addressing the social and political challenges of our time. By engaging with communities and working to strengthen the public sphere, public sociologists can help to promote more inclusive and democratic forms of communication and bring about positive social change.
