Medieval Nonsense Humour in Scribal Additions

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Analysis of manuscript additions by medieval scribes at the ends of texts they copied, which vary in contant but sometimes seem to be genuine nonsense. Although number of literary scholars claim that nonsense as category of literary aesthetics was irrelevant to the Middle Ages, these scribal experiments seem to contradict them.

Assessing whether they were supposed to be humorous is another challenge.
