Abstract

The paper presents one type of methodological material, the goal of which is the development of the ability to solve word problems using the development of reading skills. A key characteristic of the materials of the varied word problems is the fact that this development takes place through the student's deeper understanding of the internal structure of word problems.

These methodical materials are primarily intended for the 2nd grade of elementary school, possibly for elementary school students, and always offer one basic task and teach two or three very similar variations of it set in the same context. The difference between the variations lies in the mathematical structure, which often leads to different solution strategies.

Pupils are guided first to work together with the text of the basic task and then to its individual and group solution. After a joint discussion and presentation of various solutions, the students choose one of the other varied word problem, either a practice task or a challenge.

This is followed again by individual and group work at the end, supplemented by reflection focused on examining the differences and specifics of individual tasks.
