Abstract

The original concept of the Monroe-Kellie (M-K) doctrine from 1783 about the invariance of the total volume of the contents of the cranial cavity (cerebrospinal fluid - CSF, blood, brain tissue) was gradually supplemented on the basis of new knowledge about the dynamic changes of the blood and cerebrospinal fluid compartments and the compliance of brain tissue. These findings broadened the view of the concept of the M-K doctrine without questioning it.

Recently, however, findings have emerged about the mechanisms of compliance of the calva itself during chronic changes in intracranial pressure due to bone remodeling and have opened up a discussion of some questioning of the validity of the original statement of the M-K doctrine about the immutability of the total intracranial volume.
