Translatological analysis of selected mythologems found in the 'Harry Potter' universe

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2023

Abstract

This article examines selected mythologems that can be found in Harry Potter books in four translations: the Czech translation by the Medek brothers, the first Russian translation by the Rosmen publishing house, the second Russian translation by M. V. Spivak, and the

Ukrainian translation by V. E. Morozov. The relevance of the research is motivated by the presence of mythological creatures in the novel, which were taken from world mythology and in some cases even creatively reimagined. The analysis will draw attention to the strategic approach of specific translators and bring clarity to the translation process in this area. For the needs of the study, the definition of the term mythologem will be provided, which may also benefit subsequent academic research in this field.
