Abstract

Every language is constantly evolving and it makes sense that its components would gradually change over the centuries. Although the lexicon represents the most dynamic component in the variation, the permanent evolution also manifests itself in spelling.

If we observe medieval French writing, we can see that it was quite close to its oral form and the graphemes corresponded to the phonemes. Today, it is rather difficult to find a French word whose spelling accurately reproduces the pronunciation.
