The Other of Recognition

In recent years, recognition has developed into an independent, extremely productive paradigm within social philosophy. The problem of "nonrecognition or misrecognition" (Taylor 1994) has long been neglected.

Only recently has research turned more strongly to ambivalence or the other of recognition. Following on from this, the conference will examine both the immanent contradictoriness of recognition processes, as well as counter-terms (such as ignorance, contempt or disregard) and counter-phenomena in various social contexts.

While the first day of the conference will discuss the conceptual vocabulary that can be used to talk about this other of recognition, the second day will examine various spheres of recognition to see to what extent processes of asymmetrical socialization take place here alongside mutual recognition, i.e. to what extent the other of recognition is (re-)produced.
