Abstract

The two-part monograph was prepared by a multidisciplinary team of experts in an innovative way based on the latest knowledge and in the spirit of the concept of modern foreign textbooks. Sixteen chapters include a completely revised classification and systematics of sudden abdominal events (SAB).

Current options for laboratory and imaging examinations are presented and discussed. The issue of inflammatory NPB including tertiary peritonitis, sepsis and septic shock is elaborated in detail.

A current, sometimes controversial opinion on conservative treatment is given, and guidelines are always given. A separate chapter deals in detail with ileus conditions and acute conditions associated with non-specific intestinal inflammation.

The section on vascular NPB is multidisciplinary, and findings on bleeding into the digestive tract, including bleeding complications from hematological causes, are summarized. Attention is also paid to NPB of traumatic and periprocedural origin as well as NPB of gynecological and urological origin.

Conditions simulating NPB are widely discussed, including intoxications and medicinal causes. There is a comprehensive concept of NPB in children.
