The social consideration of a linguistic variety cannot be separated from the historical, cultural and political circumstances through which it has passed. This, which is applicable to any language or dialect, is particularly relevant in the case of the Castilian variety, given the special circumstances through which it has passed and which have led it to be considered a model of Spanish by many speakers and to a large part of its linguistic features having become part of the standard language. For this reason, it is particularly important to know what today's Spanish speakers think of it.

This work studies the way in which Spanish speakers from different Spanish-speaking communities, both Spanish and Latin American, perceive the Castilian variety. It presents the results on linguistic beliefs and attitudes derived from the surveys carried out within the Project for the Study of Beliefs and Attitudes towards the Varieties of Spanish in the 21st Century (PRECAVES XXI), a pan-Hispanic project conceived, created, organised and coordinated by the two editors of this volume, Ana M. Cestero and Florentino Paredes. The reader will find in this book updated information on the perception of the Castilian variety at the beginning of the 21st century, the beliefs, assessments, attitudes and stereotypes with which it is associated. In the chapters that make up the volume, written by renowned specialists, the same methodology has been followed and extensive and representative social samples of the respective territories have been used, which guarantees the comparability of the results and the reliability of the conclusions. In short, it offers a scientific and rigorous view of beliefs in relation to Castilian and attitudes towards this linguistic variety.
