The paper discusses the type of word problems "What numbers make sense?" and the solving strategies of 5th graders. The problems are atypical as they do not have a question.
Instead, they are given a menu of data (numbers, words, etc.) to be inserted into the text of the problem in the marked places. The pupils worked with this type of problem in three mathematics lessons over a period of three weeks.
