Atypical word problems of the type "Fidgets"

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2023

Abstract

The paper focuses on word problems of the type "Fidgets", on pupils' solving strategies and the types of arguments 5th graders use to justify their solutions. Fidgets are a type of word problem that do not have a question.

Instead, pupils get a set of data (numbers, words, etc.) that they must fill into gaps in the text of the problem. Because there is no question, these word problems are atypical from the point of view of traditional perception of word problems. The aim of this paper is to identify and describe the strategies and types of arguments that pupils used in solving Fidget word problems.
