Integrating innovations in asthma research into clinical practice

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2023

Abstract

The past decade has seen large shifts in our approach to asthma, with the achievement of many advances in our understanding of its underlying mechanisms and the development of new approaches to its diagnosis and treatment. Indeed, much has changed from our new understanding of disease heterogeneity and related comorbid conditions, to the use of variable dosing of inhaled steroids and reliever combination therapies and to the development of targeted biologics.

In this special issue of Respiratory Medicine entitled "Innovations in Asthma", several publications highlight innovations that are at the forefront of asthma research and clinical care. This includes new understandings of its mechanisms and pathophysiology, novel approaches to pheno/endotyping, the use of 'real-world data' to advance learnings, as well as approaches to prevention and management of specific patient subpopulations.
