The article presents a non-traditional type of word problems and methodological materials that offer concrete ways to work with these problems in mathematics and Czech language classes. The aim of the Fidgets methodological materials is to enhance the students' need to perceive the linguistic and contextual level of word problems, to evoke the need to argue and to use real experiences in solving them.
The word problem tasks naturally encourage pupils to experiment, giving them the opportunity to discover new solving strategies. Using three specific tasks, we guide the reader through the entire process of working with a word problem, reflecting on pupils' solutions and teachers' experiences from early pilots.
