Silver-based antibacterial textiles fabricated by magnetron sputtering

There is an ongoing interest in the production of antibacterial textiles, i.e. materials capable to inhibit the growth of microbes or completely eliminate them. In this study, we investigate the possibility to produce such materials by means of low-pressure DC magnetron sputtering of silver onto textile substrates (non-woven mask, PEEK and PP mesh).

It is shown that this simple and straightforward technique allows for the effective coating of the textiles with a thin Ag layer and assures high antibacterial action of fabricated materials connected with the release of bactericidal Ag+ ions from the coating in contact with water. Furthermore, the combined biological tests and atomic absorption measurements revealed that the amount of released silver and thus also antibacterial action of metalized textiles may be tailored simply by the Ag deposition time.
